Beautify Buffum For Our Kids

Project GoalThe projects' goals are: - To make the physical learning environment more inviting and engaging for children with special needs; and - To create an environment which facilitates peer interactions and development of social/play skills leading to increased social awareness and cognitive devlelopment.
Location DescriptionBuffum originally served as an elementary school (1980 – 2011) and was designed primarily with the needs of typically developing children ages 5 – 11 years in mind. Since 2011, and its reestablishment as an LBUSD preschool, minimal modifications were made in order to provide outdoor play spaces more appropriate for a preschool aged population of children (e.g. installed fencing around play areas). However, Buffum now serves primarily children with a variety of special needs including autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, and other physical and health impairments (which may involve use of wheelchairs, walkers and other adaptive equipment). These children would benefit greatly from additional improvements/changes to the current environment.
